    BUYER GUIDE

How to evaluate AI governance software without buying the wrong category.

Most evaluations go wrong before the first demo, because the team has not written down what it needs to prove. This is a practical process for engineering and risk leaders choosing AI governance software, with questions to send vendors and the claims to treat with caution.

New to the category? Start with what each type of AI governance tool does.

    A five step evaluation

    1. 1

Name what you have to prove, and to whom

A board, a regulator and an enterprise buyer ask different questions. Write down the questions you are actually asked most often. If they come from procurement, the buyer's questionnaire is your requirements document.

    2. 2

      Map the obligations that apply

Which frameworks apply depends on what the system does, where its output is used and your role as provider or deployer. Settle this before comparing products, or every demo will look relevant.

    3. 3

Test evidence capture on a real system

Ask to connect one real repository or system during the trial. Look at what is captured automatically, what someone still has to type in, and whether each record shows who approved it and when.

    4. 4

      Ask the verification question

Hand a sample output to someone outside the team and ask whether they can check it without taking your word for it. If the answer depends on trusting a document you wrote, it is a description, not evidence.

See what a Proof Pack contains
    5. 5

      Check data access and integration

Understand exactly what the software reads, what it stores and where. Governance tooling that needs broad production data access creates its own review.

    Questions to send every vendor

    1. Which sources does the product capture evidence from, and which must be entered by hand?
    2. Is each evidence record tied to a specific commit, approval and timestamp?
    3. How are AI agent tool permissions and their approvals recorded?
    4. Can a third party verify an exported artifact without access to your account?
    5. Which frameworks can the same evidence be mapped to?
    6. What does the product explicitly not cover, such as runtime monitoring or legal advice?
    7. What data does the product read and retain, and for how long?
    8. How long does it take to produce the first artifact from a real repository?

    Claims to treat with caution

    • Claims to certify compliance. Software can support evidence; it cannot grant a legal conclusion.
    • Claims to replace every governance, monitoring, GRC and security tool at once.
    • Presents agent explainability as solved. No current system gives a reliable causal account of its own decisions.
    • Evidence that only exists as answers someone typed into a form.

Where Lumovra AI fits in an evaluation

Lumovra AI answers one part of the evaluation: independent evidence. It captures governance relevant changes from your CI and pull requests, including agent tool permissions and approvals, and exports them as a Proof Pack a buyer can verify. It is not a GRC platform, a questionnaire tool or a runtime monitoring product, and it does not certify compliance. Teams usually run it alongside those tools. See how it works, try it on the free plan, or compare pricing.

Bring a real repository to the evaluation.

The fastest way to judge evidence tooling is to see what it captures from changes you already shipped.
